The Santa Fe Fire Department was established on October 31, 1880, and was run primarily as a volunteer service for approximately 100 years.

In 1987, the City Fire Department became a fully paid department, and has operated as such ever since.

The Fire Department is comprised of three Divisions:

Operations
Support Services

Staffing
The Santa Fe Fire Department is made up of 136 commissioned firefighter / medics and six civilian staff. The department fulfills its mission by fully staffing six fire stations strategically placed throughout the City.

In addition to handling everyday emergencies, we have a Heavy Rescue Unit, Airport Rescue Firefighting Unit, and several Special Teams with highly trained staff to handle specific emergencies.

We serve a population of just over 72,000 in a jurisdiction of 41.5 square miles. Since Santa Fe is one of the leading art and tourism destinations, we serve approximately 1.2 million visitors annually.

As the Capital City and County Seat, we serve thousands of Federal, State, and County employees who commute to Santa Fe on a daily basis.
